The National Council on Aging Center for Health Aging has received record levels of government funding for their falls prevention services. New legislation will provide $5 million from the Prevention and Public Health Fund.
Last week, President Obama signed the FY14 funding bill. The legislation provides $5 million from the Prevention and Public Health Fund for falls prevention activities at the Administration for Community Living. As with many aging services, elder falls activities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were level-funded at $1.9 million. In this tight budget environment, any new source of funding is an immense accomplishment, but our goal remains lofty—to finally achieve the $10 million for falls that the Senate has proposed in recent years to support work at both agencies.
